What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From my feedback of my music video, I learned that people really understood the message behind the video itself (the narrative) and also people thought that me and my partner used varied shot types and also used the transitions very well as they matched the song very well. Some comments we had from the feedback of our A2 class were that we made sure the pace of the music video matched the song very well as it helped display the narrative very well. We were also told that we used varied locations which is really good as it makes the video more realistic and makes it easier to believe the passing of time. People thought that the use of the record button in one of our scenes was very clever as they thought it added very well with the story.

Me and my partner made sure to ask the people who watched our music video what they thought we could have improved on. There was only a few answers as most people gave us the answer of " no I don't think you need to improve anything, it was really good " but the feedback we got from a few mentioned that we could have used a few more characters to add to the effect of the video and that we could have displayed the good relationship between the mother and son for a longer period of time so that when it came to the mother's death at the end, the emotional impact would be greater.

This is the feedback video me and my partner filmed when we asked some people to answer a few questions after watching our music video:

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and convetions of real media products?

1.  Shot of boy dancing on stage- The setting of this shot was in a hall. This setting subverts the genre of soul music as a stage and hall is normally seen in some R&B music videos when the artist is performing. The costumes worn in this shot subvert the normal costumes seen in a soul music video. Normally there are casual clothes worn in a soul music video as the song will normally be about love or breakups so the costume is very relaxed and as realistic as possible.  My partner and I chose for the main characters in this shot to wear school uniform to emphasise their age and also to make it clear that the son was performing for the mother at school, we wanted to make it as realistic as possible. In this shot, we decided to make the shot look like a recording therefore, I had to make the camera unsteady and make it look like a home video. When it came to editing this shot, I had to do create the red record button on Photoshop and then transfer it to the corner of the screen on Premiere Pro so that it could look like a home recorded video. The main characters in this shot are the children and we wanted to present them as innocent so when the story progresses, we get to see the venerability of the small boy and also the changes within his life.
2.  Shot of woman/mother against the white wall- This shot was filmed under a bridge on a plain white wall. My partner and I didn’t want the wall to look perfect, we wanted cracks in the wall, and this was a reflection on her life. That it is also shown through the pale white of the wall with her black cardigan showing the emotional dents in her life. The wall behind her also looks like there is a door that is sealed off, this show that she is trapped in her own troubles. This conforms to the stereotype of the soul music genre as in most of the soul music video there is a shot where the artist or the character is in a reflective scene.  A music video that is similar to this example is John Legend ‘Ordinary people’ as he has a background of white and he shows the struggles different types of people go through in their lives.
3.  Shot of woman/mother looking at the graffiti- This scene is set on a grotty estate where the character is shown against graffiti with a message.  This conforms to the genre of soul music because there is always a hidden message within a video. Soul music usually has a message behind it and is made to provoke emotion from the audience. Usually there are mostly hidden messages about love and companionship but we subvert the genre as we use illness and financial/ family problems to create the emotional atmosphere.
4.  Shot of cancer ward sign- This shot conforms to the soul music genre as it showcases narrative within the music video. Normally in soul music videos there is an element of health problems or family/ romantic problems. This shot conforms as we show how the illnesses cause the main character to break down completely, causing her to commit suicide and leave her only son behind.
5.  Shot of woman/mother in the mirror looking at the hair brush- This shot from my music video conforms to the genre of soul music as we can see from the frame that the character is looking concerned about her recent discovery of her hair falling out because of her chemotherapy. We wanted to show the emotion on her face so that the audience could feel what she was feeling. We decided to dim the lights and use just the lamp for as we wanted to show the audience that her life is filled with darkness and the only bit of light that is left in her life is her son.  This type of lighting is seen in the soul music video called ‘India Arie’ by the artist India Arie.
6.  Shot of woman/ mother crying in the bathroom- This shot conforms to the genre of soul music as I have displayed one frame that shows the amount of stress the main character is in. One is when she is thinking about stopping her life and the other is when she finally decided to take her own life. This is usually seen in soul music videos as they are mostly narrative  and show the timeline from happy to depressed whether  it is about a couple breaking up or showing the struggle of a working class person. In the soul music video ‘when I see you’ by Fantasia, and ‘good man’ by Raphael Sadiq there is a scene where the artist and character is in the bathroom expressing her emotional feelings too.
7.  The shot of the woman/ mother looking dizzy after taking the pills- This shot subverts the genre of soul music as this type of effect is normally seen in dance videos or fast paced videos. We used this effect to show how she was affected by the medicine she took to kill herself. We wanted the audience to wonder whether she was regretting taking the pills or she was just anticipating death as in this particular scene she is pacing up and down the kitchen looking dizzy. If this sort of scene was to be shown in normal soul music videos, they wouldn’t show the effect of suicide (after taking the pills), they would just go straight into the discovery of the dead body by a partner or a family member.
8.  The Shot of the woman/mother dead on the sofa- This shot subverts the genre of soul music as we show how the main character dies after taking the pills. We wanted to show her dead on the sofa as the sofa plays a vital role in this video. It is first shown at the begging of the music video when the mother hand her child her chain and then it is shown when the artist is reflecting back on the good times he enjoyed with his mother and finally this scene when she dies on the sofa. The sofa is a key object in showing the timeline of the video the story. A good example of the symbolic sofa is in Raphael Sadiq’s music video ‘Good man’.
9.  The shot of the woman/mother in heaven waving- This shot conforms to the genre of soul music as it shows someone being released emotionally. We chose to use bright lighting to show that she is in heaven and also that her life is not hard anymore. We show the contrast within the rest of the video as for example there is a shot where the main character is against a white wall and this shot’s colour is very grey and depressing, this was used by us to reflect upon her emotions. In this scene we also made her wear a white dress to also reflect the heaven look for her to look like an angel that has had all her troubles taken away from her and is now free emotionally and also physically.

Magazine single advert analysis

Saskwatch- Soul music band

Saskwatch is a soul music group that are well known for their bright colours and stage presence. This group used their single advert to promote themselves and their new single to catch people's attention when they are turning the page of a magazine they might be reading or when they are passing by a poster on the street. This advert has different techniques to attract a persons eye, a few examples are:
  • The range of colours i.e white, light green, back and various other colours from he clothing that is warn by the artists in the band like pink, blue, red etc...
  • The bold font of the name of the band and the name of the single which is edited to stand out from all the other writing on the advert to show the consumer who they are and make it clear. The information of when the single is out is smaller than the bigger font of the name of the band and the title of the single because straight after the consumer has read the bigger font, they are automatically drawn to the smaller writing beneath which shows the consumer when the single is out so.
  • The first thing a consumer sees is the big eye catching collage of the artists and it also displays their different personalities and gives the consumer a glimpse of what the single will be like.
  • The black background helps to make the picture and writing more easier to see and more eye catching while staying bold.
