Q.7Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From doing these practice tasks, I learnt a lot, especially when we were give specific things we  needed to include in our tasks. We had activities such as making sure we had the right camera angles to suit the mood of what we had learnt and also make sure we knew how to use these shots correctly. An example is from the first ever filming task I did with one group, the mistake we made was doing an over the shoulder shot but the character's hair was in the way, so from then on, I knew that every time we I do an over the shoulder shot, I should make sure that it is correct before displaying it to an audience. From the prelim tasks, I also learnt how to edit my work properly, at first me and my group did not use the facilities that were offered on Premiere Pro but when we got comfortable and started doing more practice, we eventually got comfortable with putting in effects, making the film go faster/slower, putting the volume up and down etc...
As we can see, my filming skills developed, this picture board shows different shots from my horror movie opening BabyScissors. The prelim tasks helped me develop different styles and different ways in shooting. By the time we had done all the practice filming, when it came to the real shooting of the movie opening, I felt confident that I knew what I was doing, I knew how to use the camera and how to shoot great shots to create a scary effect as it was a horror movie opening!

Shot type used in each picture:
Prelim task: Over the shoulder, Close-up, Two-shot and long shot.
BabyScissors: Long shot, High angle shot, close up and mid shot/split screen

VOD: Video on demand

Short for Video-on-Demand, an umbrella term for a wide set of technologies and companies whose common goal is to enable individuals to select videos from a central server for viewing on a television or computer screen. VoD can be used for entertainment (ordering movies transmitted digitally), education (viewing training videos), and videoconferencing (enhancing presentations with video clips). Although VoD is being used somewhat in all these areas, it is not yet widely implemented. VoD's biggest obstacle is the lack of a network infrastructure that can handle the large amounts of data required by video
This would pose as an issue to the film industry as they will be losing out on money, people might not go to the cinema, they might not buy DVDs because they can watch the movie online.

QUESTION 1: BabyScissors frames

  • The first and seventh frame represents what the opening is about, it shows a jar full of blood and hair, this shows how the killer is very disturbed. Me and my partner's convention was props. Our audience would like this because in horror movies there is always gore and they like the shock factor.
  • The second frame shows the killer and the victim. This frame showcases the dramatic effect the scene will have on the audience because the victim's drink is spiked  and she suddenly falls unconscious.
  • The third frame shows the victim and the killer walking into the living room, it gives the horror movie audience a sense of danger and excites them, also leaves them guessing what is going to happen
  • The forth frame shows the killer looking through the door hole, excited to see his new victim, the audience would like this scene as it shows a bit of his crazy personality. This also shows the camera work and editing to make it as realistic as possible, we got this convention from the film Attack the block
  • The fifth frame shows the title of the movie and also the killer in the window, waiting for his victim's arrival, this would scare the audience as he has this whole meeting planned.
  •  The eighth and ninth frame shows the two characters, firstly in a a split screen to show the craziness of the killer and the innocence of the victim and then the killer waiting for the victim to collapse in the ninth.
  • The seventh frame was inspired by the movie Saw because of the Gore (blood and hair)

Q2: how does my media product represent particular social groups

My horror movie opening was made to appeal to many different types of audiences. The victim in this opening is a young student wanting to gain extra money by applying for a babysitting job, as you can guess the interview does not go to plan. This type of storyline would appeal to a social group such as young students mostly females as they are normally the main victims in most horror movies and do look for small part time work in babysitting. My victim can be related to the female victim in Scream the horror movie as they are both very vulnerable.

Q3: My chosen distributer for BabyScissors!

I would like my Horror movie opening to be distributed by a company such as See Saw films, as i did research for this company and i know that it has recently become successful with films such as The King's Speech and The Black Swan. These two movies made a lot of money and won many awards such as Oscars and the Golden globes, this shows me that they would be able to distribute my film very well and give me more of a chance of success. However, an issue would be the money it would cost to distribute as they would want a huge amount to distribute our small film BabyScissors which could lead me and my partner into a lot of debt.

Also we would need to hire some famous actors and actresses so that the film can have more of a chance to expand our audience. As a British film I know that BabyScissors will be a difficult film to make really successful in the UK especially because it is a horror movie, Sweeney Todd is one of the only recognised British horror movies that has been successful worldwide, this is because of the actors, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, so this shows me that the actors are very important in making a film successful.

BabyScissors should be distributed into a cinema such as the Odeon as it showcases the best films and has many cinemas around the UK therefore, reaching to a wider audience and receiving more profit, this helps as the more money that is made means the more money we make to pay back all the money borrowed to us and also for our own profit.
